‘Mamatar Chithi’ To Be Captured on Celluloid

One of the most popular poems in Assamese literature, ‘Mamatar Chithi’ by Hem Baruah, is going to be captured on celluloid soon in Barpeta. This was informed by Nirmal Das, who will direct and produce the film under the banner of amateur play group Mukha.


Addressing a press meet at Barpeta Press Club recently, Das, a playwright and director of repute informed that he has made several experiments on this poem for the last 15 years and has come to a conclusion to produce a film on it. Apart from production and direction, Das will also write the dialogue and cinematography.

It is needless to introduce the reader to ‘Mamatar Chithi’, which has won the hearts of millions of readers across the State. Its diction, rhythm as well as the musings have made it the most recited and popular of Hem Baruah's works. Nirmal Das has already dramatised the poem, which has been successfully performed by the mobile theatre group Saraighat Theatre for two years. 


Das stated that he has already selected the locations for shooting. River Bhogdoi and its surroundings, which occupies a prominent place in the poem and parts of Barpeta will be main locations. Besides, he will try to make it an exceptional creation as he claimed that it will be the first film in Assamese based on a poem.
