The 13-minutes long horror film ‘Awakenings’, scripted, produced and directed by a 27-year-old Assamese, Bhargav Saikia, bagged as many as 15 awards in international film festivals across the globe, in 2015.
The awards include the best foreign language horror film, the best thriller, the best film, the best cinematography, the best actress, the best director etc., in the international film festivals of California, Los Angeles, Dubai etc.
Officially selected for more than 100 film festivals, ‘Awakenings’ also garnered 18 nominations and has been invited to many countries like Canada, USA, Ireland, Germany and Mexico. It has got wide acceptance by the audiences of Switzerland, Belgium, Australia, Turkey among others. Truly a rare feat for an Indian short film in the horror/suspense genre.
‘Awakenings’ also got a raving review from Ivan Villamel Sanchez, the famous horror film producer of Spain, saying that Bhargav has made a great work. A judge also praised ‘Awakenings’ saying that “it is a stylist little horror opus. The artiste does a good job of eliciting tension and suspense. This was enjoyable to watch and beautifully shot..”.
‘Awakenings’ is the second film of Bhargav Saikia. The first was ‘Kafiron Ki Namaaz’ which also got national and international awards in 2013. Both the films have been produced by his own company – Lorien Motion Pictures, Mumbai.
The awards and honors from various festivals will definitely serve as an inspiration for him to keep making more films.
Bhargav is already onto his next project. “I am writing another horror film, but this time it is feature length. I hope the success of ‘Awakenings’ will help me get the horror feature film funded soon. Film festivals have enabled me to network with genre filmmakers and festival programmers from all over the world,” the filmmaker said.
Bhargav Saikia, who has made Assam and India proud by his rare and enviable cinematic success, is the only son of parents, reputed physician of Biswanath Chariali in Sonitpur district, Dr Amal Saikia and Arundhuti Saikia.
