‘Lokabandhoo’, Dhiraj Kashyap’s much anticipated biopic on the life and works of legendary Assamese physician, freedom fighter and philanthropist Dr Bhubaneswar Barooah will hit the theatres on May 13 all over. Earlier, the film had garnered good reviews after a special show was held in the Apsara Cinema Hall on February 7.
Barooah born in 1893, lived through the turbulent decades of 1930s and 1950s and contributed to India’s freedom struggle. His whole orientation was about helping and guiding people as he had a real genuine interest in people. As a physician of undivided Assam, Barooah gained prominence for his wonderful sense of clinical diagnosis, capacity to read patients’ psyche and for the way he treated and managed patients. He travelled to far-flung areas to create awareness among ignorant masses about health, sanitation and hygiene and about the evils of opium eating.
The film which spanned the period 1937-50, strives to instill Dr Bhubaneswar Barooah’s ideals of serving the poor and the needy with unflinching devotion among the youth. A lot of research works went into the costumes, residences, vehicles, utensils, among other things of that era. The film also brings into light several of Assam’s cultural icons including Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, Amiya Kumar Das, Ambika Giri Rai Choudhury, Gopinath Bordoloi among others.
