Choreographers Farah Khan, Ganesh Acharya, Remo D’Souza among others in Bollywood have considerably raised their profiles after making successful transitions from choreography to film making. After achieving recognition with his work as a choreographer in a number of Assamese movies, Ashim Baishya is now busy as a filmmaker with several movies in his kitty. Since his debut as independent choreographer in 1998’s enormously successful ‘Joubane Amoni Kare’, Baishya has proven to be a prolific choreographer, having choreographed songs in well over 50 Assamese films, video films and albums. He has also acted in a number of Assamese features and video films. Meanwhile, he has made a name for himself after working as a choreographer in the Satabdi Roy directed Bengali feature ‘Om Shanti’. Baishya has also choreographed songs in five Oriya movies. His Oriya film ‘Raji Jihu Sange Hai Gola Bhabo’ completed 100 days at the box-office.
Ashim Baishya, who has directed well over ten video films, wielded the megaphone for the first time in the Assamese feature film ‘Chandu’. The film, scripted by Nilakshi Devi from a story by Baishya himself, is slated to hit the theatres all over in the last week of June. The film’s title role is played by noted theatre artiste-filmmaker Baharul Islam. The film portrays the often tumultuous relationship between the city’s slum dwellers and the affluent section of the society. The movie wants to convey a strong message of humanity through the character of Baharul Islam. It has got ingredients of love, action, romance and drama.
‘Chandu’s various other artistes are Jonali Devi, Gayatri Bora, Muhi Bora, Rajen Neog, Madhavi, Ruprekha, Reena Bora, Hemanta Bora, Pankaj Bora, Rajkumar Thakur, Abhijit, Marami, Aaimoni, child artistes Chinmoy Barman, Sneha Laskar, Dikhita Das, Trishna Devi, Hirakjyoti Bora etc. The film is produced by Dambarudhar Bora under the banner of Urvashi Production. ‘Chandu’ is co-produced by Biswajit Das and Bhumika Talukdar. Its cinematographed by Raju Chetri and Suraj Duwarah. The film’s director of photography is Ratul Barman. Various songs in the film scored by Ajay Phukan are rendered by Mitali Kakati, Mrinal Vaishnav and Ajay Phukon. All the songs are choreographed by Ashim Baishya. Editing has been done by Moni Rajkonwar and Anupam Bordoloi. Colour grading is done by Anupam Bordoloi. Pranab Konwar and Ajay Phukan have worked on the film’s sound effects. The film’s assistant directors are Bhabesh Nath and Jintu Nath.
Interesting that besides ‘Chandu’, Ashim Baishya is working on a number of directorial ventures which are lying in various stages. His movie ‘Love In Bangkok‘ is scheduled to hit the screens on July 10. Meanwhile, two of his projects ‘Dispurot Gabharu’ and ‘Rodali’ have completed their shooting schedules. Moreover, ‘Du Du Dubai‘ and ‘Zero’ have completed their initial shooting schedules.
