Hailing from Guwahati, a group of like-minded youngsters with a broad range of experiences in the field of acting, dancing, music, singing, story writing, cinematography, editing and direction joined hands to form Deuka where they could make films in a collaborative process with minimum possible expenditure.
While attempting to prove a point or two, the group started off with a 3-minute short film titled ‘Crossroads’, an almost no budget film, which was liked by people. The film was officially selected to the Goldensun Short Film festival, Malta Islands and was a winner of the Best Film award at festivals like ‘Real on Reel : short film contest’, organised by Jankidevi Memorial College, Delhi and ‘Director’s Cut’, organised by Alcheringa 2016 at IIT, Guwahati. It was also selected for screening at the Saraighat Film Festival 2016 where it was adjudged the second best short film. It was also screened at the Technical Students’ Forum’s meet held at Guwahati University on February 28 this year.
Deuka’s next project, another 3-minute short film called ‘Puhor : A Ray of Light’ was officially selected to the Global Short Film Festival held in New York and it was screened at the Adda Short Film Festival in Guwahati.
The members of Deuka include Bishal, Vishal, Arunav, Roopchanda, Ziun, Khanjan (Rubu), Debayan, Banalata, Old Delusion (the band), Sausthav, Moniroop, Manash and Maharshi. both an artistic and an emotional level.
The group’s ongoing projects include a film called ‘Behu’ that depicts the life of a prostitute, in addition to exposing the city’s seedy underbelly. Made on a shoe-string budget, the artistes include Shyamalima, Bantismita, Seema Baruah, Gunajit Das, Bubi Bordoloi Talukdar among others.
The team believes that good films do not always require a very big budget, they can be successfully made with determination and an open mind.
