A new album with six songs titled ‘Zigar’ rendered by a gifted newcomer Bahnim Mahanta was released at the Guwahati Press Club recently. A winner of the best singer award for two consecutive years at Guwahati College, Bahnim also achieved considerable successes at the inter-college competitions held in Gauhati University for the sessions 2010-11 and 2011-12. An offspring of parents, retired BSNL employee Madan Chandra Mahanta and well-known astrologer and Vastu Shastra specialist Dr Menaka Mahanta, Bahnim has performed with emotions, and a lot of feeling in his debut album, which was appreciated by everyone present on the day of release. The album was in the making for more than two and a half years, but it was worth it all the same. ‘Kajal Boron Kanya’, ‘Daak Oi Daak’, ‘Mor Gat Lagil Soni’ and ‘Oi Jaan Huni Ja’ are written and tuned by Dharmendra Nath, while ‘Mone Mone Aahi’s lyrics and tunes are by singer Tarali Sarma. Another song ‘Numali Naach Pomili Naach’ is written by Dharmendra Nath and tuned by Tarali Sarma. All the songs are worth listening to, and should appeal listeners of good music.
On the day of release, the traditional lamp was lighted by noted singer and the music director of ‘Zigar’, Tarali Sarma. The well-known guests who graced the occasion include actor-musician Bhagwat Pritam, singer Anupam Saikia, Bahnim’s Borgeet Guru Krishna Goswami, among others.
