It is a measure of Parbati Prasad Baruah’s greatness as a lyricist and singer that with each passing year, his fame and fan following has continued to grow and now, 53 years after his death, he appears like a colossus on the modern Assamese music scene.
Recently, glowing tributes were paid to this legendary lyricist, composer, poet and singer at a function held at the Rabindra Bhawan. The function titled ‘Ek Ananya Sandhya – Jonaki Mel’, was presented by the Parbati Prasad Memorial Trust, in collaboration with the Directorate of Cultural Affairs, on the occasion of Baruah’s 54th death anniversary. It was a pleasant experience for the audience to witness the musical creation of the lyricist-composer. The show opened with a melodious rendition by noted singer Malabika Bora.
The highlight of the evening was a half-an-hour musical feature titled ‘Seuji Parot’, presented by the drama-unit of the Cultural Directorate. Other programmes included a chorus sung by the children of Sanskritika, and the renditions of Parbati Prasad songs by the winners of the competitions held earlier.
