Assamese Film ‘Kothanodi’ in Busan International Film Fest, South Korea

Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), held in South Korea, will see some of the finest works by Indian filmmakers this year. The prestigious list will include Neeraj Ghaywan's 'Masaan', Nagesh Kukunoor's 'Dhanak' as well as Shahram Alidi's 'Black Horse Memories'. Indian film 'Zubaan' by Mizez Singh will be the inaugural film at this year's 20th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), which will have a major Indian presence.

Assamese film 'Kothanodi' directed by Bhaskar Hazarika will be screened in the 'A Window on Asian Cinema' section, along with 'Orange Candy' directed by Biju Viswanath (Tamil) and 'Peace Haven' directed by Suman Ghosh (Bengali).

"We are happy and proud that after a successful run at Sundance, Berlin and Cannes (film festivals), we are now headed to Busan with three of our films, one of which 'Black Horse Memories', our first international venture is in the competition category," said Shiladitya Bora, CEO of Drishyam Films, which produced 'Masaan', 'Dhanak' and 'Black Horse Memories'.

It has to be mentioned that 'Kothanodi' (The River of Fables) was selected by the Asian Cinema Fund, South Korea, for its Post Production Grant 2015. The members were bowled over by its quality and creativity. It became the first Assamese film and only the second film from India to be selected for the prestigious grant. The Asian Cinema Fund offered the film with the opportunity to complete its post-production in Korea, before facilitating its world premiere in the Asia's biggest film festival - the Busan International Film Festival. BIFF is doing a great job of showcasing Asian cinema and has become the go-to place for anyone looking for Asian content. 'Kothanodi' will share the limelight with some of the biggest names in Asian cinema.

The film has been written by Hazarika, with dialogues by Assamese novelist and Sahitya Akademi-awardee Arupa Patangia Kalita. Sound designing has been done by Jatin Sharma. Music has been composed by Amarnath Hazarika. The film is cinematographed by Vijay Kutty, and edited by Suresh Pai. The film stars Seema Biswas, Adil Hussain, Zerifa Wahid, Kopil Bora who is credited with putting together all the artistes for the film, Urmila Mahanta and Asha Bordoloi.

After the world premiere in Busan in October, the production will seek an India premiere at the International Film Festival of India in November. Based on events and characters in Rasaraj Laxminath Bezbarua's Burhi Aair Xadhu, 'Kothanodi' has been produced by Dergaon-based Anurupa Hazarika and Utpala Mukherjee.
