Assamese Movie ‘Antareen’ Gearing Up for Release

It's no surprise to see audiences turning up in droves for the most anticipated Assamese film of the year - ‘Bahniman’, which is currently pocketing a lion’s share of the revenue at the box office. But very different from ‘Bahniman’ in terms of story and treatment, is the upcoming Assamese movie ‘Antareen’ (Quest of Sanctuary).

It’s quite a challenge to turn a piece of literature into a visual presentation. ‘Antareen’ is based on a women-centric, dark psychological story by eminent litterateur Rita Chowdhury. Monjul Baruah joins a growing list of new wave filmmakers who are simultaneously expressing and developing their own cinematic vocabulary. It did not take too long for the critics to take note of this film at the festival circuit where it has garnered plaudits. The film, cited for its sensitivity and powerful storyline, has even received the Best Feature Film award at the 3rd Indian Cine Film Festival in Mumbai in 2015. Produced by Manabendra Adhikary under the banner of Artha Films, ‘Antareen’s screenplay and dialogues are penned by Rita Chowdhury and Monjul Baruah. Incidentally, Adhikary’s ‘Othello’ (we too have our Othellos) fetched noted writer Ranjit Sarma the Best Screenplay Award in the feature film category at the same film festival. Despite its critical success, ‘Othello’ is yet to hit the theatres.

Fathered by a politician’s loveless extramarital passion, Torali’s life is a quest for sanctuary from her father’s loveless world, but her intent to uncover her father’s transgression gets her trapped in a mental asylum. In that very trap, she finds Samiran who takes up her fight against the wrongs of a patriarchal world.

The film, expected to release early next year, features Arun Nath, Urmila Mahanta, Boloram Das, Aparna Dutta Choudhury, Jolly Laskar, Mayukh, Dhruba Prasad Bora, Himangshu Prasad Das, Pranami Bora, Debobrat Borthakur among others. The film is cinamatographed by Sumon Dowerah, while the sound is designed by Jatin Sarma and Debajit Changmai. The art direction is by Anup Hazarika and Rama Roy.

Director Baruah is confident that his movie will surely find its place in the heart of the viewing public.
