In a bid to revive the regional film industry, the Assam State Film (Finance and Development) Corporation (ASFFDC) Limited has decided to reopen 15 closed movie halls across the State. These movie halls, which are yet to be identified, would be provided financial incentives by the State government. Further, an amount of Rs 5 crore has been sanctioned to facilitate renovation and opening of new halls in the State.

This was announced by Chairman of ASFFDC Jatin Bora while speaking to the media during a press conference organised to announce the release date of Assamese film ‘Sonar Baran Pakhi’, a biopic on legendary folk singer Pratima Baruah Pandey. Bora further stated that Jonaki Theatre (cinema hall) in Tezpur would be declared as a heritage movie hall after its overhaul.

Directed by Bobby Sarma Baruah and jointly produced by ASFFDC and BB Entertainment Private Limited, Sonar Baran Pakhi (The Golden Wing) chronicles the life and works of Pratima Baruah Pandey and her immortal Goalpariya songs, and will hit the silver screen on November 24.

The 86-minute movie has so far been screened in 19 film festivals across the globe and also won the Grand Jury Prize (best feature) at the Indian Film Festival in Los Angeles (2017) and the Best Audience Award at the 15th Dhaka International Film Festival (2017).

“We have received positive response from people and critics wherever the movie was screened. We are looking forward to screening the move in as many theatres as possible, both in Assam and West Bengal,” said director Sarma Baruah.

Veteran actress Arati Baruah who has essayed the role of an elderly Pratima Baruah Pandey in the movie, recollected her association with the legendary singer in real life. She said the role was quite different from roles she had played earlier.
