New Play on the Life of Shri Shirdi Sai Baba

A new play on the life of Shri Shirdi Sai Baba will be staged in Guwahati for the first time. Recently, the mohurut of play ‘Shri Shirdi Sai Baba’ was held at the Sai Baba temple located in Six Mile in Guwahati in the presence of devotees and enthusiasts. The play will in all earnestness, project the divine manifestations and the teachings of Shirdi Sai Baba, and it will be directed by Basanta Kumar Baruah, who has been successfully organising the Sampurna Raas Leela Bhaona festival in Assamese and tribal languages in the city since 2009. Besides garnering wide appreciation in the national capital, where the highly traditional and revered Sankari performance was enacted in the Sangeet Natak Akademi campus of New Delhi, Sampurna Raas Leela was successfully staged at the Eastern Zonal Centre in Kolkata on the occasion of the 8th Theatre Olympics, on March 4. Dramatised by Jiten Sarma, and designed and directed by Basanta Kumar Barua, Sampurna Raas Leela is one of the 600 plays from across the world to be performed at the Theatre Olympics.

‘Shri Shirdi Sai Baba’, dramatised by Jiten Sarma, is based on the novel ‘Shri Sai Sacharitra’ - a translated work by Himanshu Sekhar Das from the original by noted Marathi writer Govind Rao Davolker. A devout Sai Baba devotee, Das, apart from being an officer with the Indian Administrative Service, is the Managing Trustee of the Shri Shirdi Sai Spiritual and Charitable Trust. The play to be staged on May 1 and 2, at the Pragjyoti Cultural Complex, will feature artistes like Ashim Krishna Barua, Jitu Buragohain, Saranga Bordoloi, Joli Bhattacharya, Priyanka Sarma, Atul Pachani, Padmarag Goswami, Manoj Das, Amitabh Rajkhowa, Mala Goswami, Diganta Bhuyan, Naba Barua, Chandan Barua, Rajiv Konwar, Chandan Mishra, etc. The play’s rehearsals are currently being held at the Hengerabari, Guwahati-based office premises of BB Creation.
